Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni began studying at Fisk University in Nashville,Tennessee.

She graduated with honors also receive a B.A. in History. Soon after attended University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.

Giovanni began educating at Rutgers University.

She gave birth to Thomas Watson Giovanni.
1995
Both Giovanni's mother and sister died of lung cancer.Giovanni was also diagnosed with the disease and had surgery at Jewish Hospital in Ohio,soon after had a lung removed.

Giovanni has ben teaching a writing and literature course at Virginia Tech and is a outstanding english professor.
